Rain Barrels

Calculate the yield of your roof by multiplying the square footage of your roof by
623 and divide by 1000.  A good formula to remember: 1 inch of rain on a 1000 sq.
Ft. Roof yields 62 gallons of water.

Tips
Level the ground where the barrel will sit.  Since the rain barrel works with gravity,
place the barrel on bricks or pressure treated timber if you find it needs to be
elevated. Just make sure the barrel is secure and level.  A filled barrel that tips over
can cause serious bodily harm or property damage.

Make sure all lids are secured to prevent children and animals from falling in the
barrel.

If you use the water in your rain barrel within a week of the rain event mosquito
larvae will not have a chance to develop.  If for some reason you do get mosquito
larvae, 'Mosquito Dunks' are safe to put in your rain barrel.

If odor or insects become a problem, Clorox is a harmless disinfectant for your rain
barrel.  Just use approximately ¼ cup.

To prevent water from overflowing the top of the rain barrel and saturating the
ground near your foundation, we recommend attaching a minimum 6' of 1.25" sump
pump hose to the overflow fitting and directing the water away from the house.

Maximize Your Water Collection  -  Be Creative
Additional rain barrels can be attached with simple fittings to increase your
conservation capabilities.
Run your overflow hose out to a rain garden.
Connect more than 6' of sump pump hose to your overflow hose, drill holes in it, run
it through your landscape and use it as a slow drip method of irrigation.
Connect your overflow hose to disperse into a 'Pondless' Water Feature equipped
with a large capacity water storage system.
Have your overflow hose run into an either above ground or below ground cistern
for additional water storage capacity.
Run your overflow into a large 'french drain' where the rain water can soak in and
restore groundwater resources.

Winter Tips
If you live in a climate that is subject to freezes in the winter, please disconnect and
put your rain barrel in the garage during those few months. If it must remain
outdoors, turn it upside down and secure with a concrete block.
