* Attend and Earth Day Event in your Community.**see bottom of newsletter for dates and locations in your area** * Plant a tree in honor or National Arbor Day – April 24th. (or have Progressive Lawnscaping do it for you!) * Spring is a good time to thatch and over-seed the lawn. Thatch buildup can smother your lawn and provide an environment for diseases. Remove thatch with a brisk raking, or with a dethatching machine. Over seeding will help fill-in the lawn and deter the re-growth of moss and weeds. Use about one pound of quality grass seed for every 300 square feet of lawn area. Apply a light compost or soil over the seed to keep it moist and in place. * Divide perennials like Daylilies, Delphiniums, iris, chrysanthemums, Daisies ,and Phlox. The additional plants you create can be traded or given to friends, or moved to a new area of the garden. * Start seeds of warm-season plants, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, marigolds, zinnias and petunias, indoors for transplanting later to the garden. * Complete pruning chores, removing dead and injured branches first. * Allow foliage of spring-flowering bulbs to remain in place after blooms fade. Leaves manufacture the food reserves, which are then stored in the bulb for a repeat showing next year. * Plant hardy perennials, such as daylilies and delphiniums. * Start tuberous begonias and caladiums indoors for transplanting to garden later. * Remove winter mulch from strawberries, but keep mulch handy in case late frosts are predicted and to help keep weeds under control. * Plant or transplant strawberries, raspberries and other small fruit. * Prune grape vines to remove dead or weakened limbs, and repair support trellises as needed. * Check out the New Products we have added at: |

Rain Barrels Rain Barrels are a simple, efficient, low-cost method for homeowners to collect and recycle water. A rain barrel collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams. Lawn and garden watering make up nearly 40% of total household water use during the summer. A rain barrel collects water and stores it for when you need it most -- during periods of drought -- to water plants, wash your car, or to top a swimming pool. It provides an ample supply of free “soft water” to homeowners, containing no chlorine, lime or calcium making it ideal for gardens, flower pots, and car and window washing. A rain barrel will save most homeowners about 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months. Saving water not only helps protect the environment, it saves you money and energy (decreased demand for treated tap water). Diverting water from storm drains also decreases the impact of runoff to streams. Therefore, a rain barrel is an easy way for you to have a consistent supply of clean, fresh water for outdoor use, FREE. |
