* Again, top of the list is WATERING!  Watering your plants and grass is extremely important in July and August. It is  recommended that you water plant material one inch per week and even more during drought conditions.  The best time of the day to water is in the morning. This allows for the plant foliage to dry before the heat of the day sets in. Be sure to water your plants thoroughly, and deeply each time you water. Deep watering will induce the plant's roots to grow deeper, where they are less likely to dry out, as well as the added benefit of anchoring the plant into the ground better.

* Stop fertilizing perennials, shrubs and roses in mid-August.  New growth won’t have time to harden off before winter.

* Hand-prune and destroy bagworms, fall webworms and tent caterpillars.

* Divide irises and divide overgrown daylily clumps.  So that the root systems won’t dry out, prepare the new site or bed beforehand, and move the pieces to their new home quickly….then water well.

* Order spring-flowering bulbs for fall planting.

* Start harvesting cucumbers, zucchini and summer squash.  This practice encourages more production, plus you don’t want them to rot on the vine. You can always donate surplus to neighbors or a local food bank.

* Harvest and freeze herbs for winter cooking.  The best time to harvest herbs is right before their flowers open.  This is when their essential oils are at their peak.

* Harvest and freeze or can fruits and vegetables.

* Now is the time to start your fall and winter vegetables.  Plant starters or seeds of green onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early this month.

* Birds need water too, so adding a water feature or birdbath to your garden will help keep them refreshed and cool during the dog days of summer.

Weathered Stone Solar

Bird Bath Fountain

Weathered Stone Solar Bird Bath Fountain

Bring a touch of elegance to your bird garden or patio with this Weathered Stone Solar Bird Bath Fountain. This unit combines classic style with bold technology for a stunning centerpiece. A scalloped detail on the base leads to a fluted pedestal, and geometric patterns on the exterior of the bowl finish the look. The bath holds up to 2 gallons of water, and brings a bit of excitement to your yard. The sound and look of moving water entice birds to your area, and the generous 16" diameter bath offers plenty of room for them to frolic and preen. A solar panel rests in the center of the bath, with a reservoir hidden underneath. An included solar powered pump connects directly to the underside of this panel, resting in the hidden water reservoir. In full sun, the solar panel powers the pump and it creates a fountain in the bath. Use the spray fountain head to create a showering effect, or remove it for a bubbler. Add the riser to the output for a taller fountain, or leave it off for a lower water feature. A textured finish inside the resin bath offers a grip for birds, and an included resin plate can be substituted for the solar panel while you are on vacation. The stone color adds a natural look, and the resin construction is perfect for use for several seasons. Enjoy birds in your garden playing in this Weathered Stone Solar Bird Bath Fountain. This bath is not intended for use in freezing temperatures. Assembly required. One year limited warranty.
Note: This bath will only operate its solar fountain during full, direct sunlight.

Providing Water Sources for Birds

During the hot and often dry conditions that make up the “dog days of summer," you will be doing yourself and your birds a big favor by providing them with a reliable source of water.

Water is one of the most important things birders can add to their backyard to attract birds. All bird species need water, and adding one or more water features to your yard will quickly attract feathered friends.

Water is very important to birds for two reasons: drinking and preening. Water is also vitally important when it's extremely hot and a bird’s ability to regulate its body temperature can become stressed. Birds do not sweat and must remove excess body heat through their respiratory system.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Joe Pye Weed -  ‘Eupatorium Maculatum’

Joe Pye weed is considered a broadleaf, herbaceous, perennial wildflower. It is a common plant of wet meadows. Spotted Joe Pye weed is a "weed" only in the sense that it is a wild plant (in North America). "Wildflower" would be a better name for this robust, upright perennial with attractive mauve flowers and imposing presence (up to 6 feet tall!).

Despite the species name, maculatum, the stems often come in a solid purple that offers an even more striking look. These sturdy stems make Eupatorium maculatum a good cut flower.  Flower heads are flattish; leaves grow in whorls.  Eupatorium maculatum eventually spreads to form a dense stand.

Design tips: Because it is a tall perennial, Joe Pye weed is effective in the back row of a flower bed -- in a cottage garden, for instance. At the center of a planting circle surrounded by shorter plants, it can serve as a focal point. In addition to its beauty, Joe Pye weed has another selling point: it's a late bloomer, flowering in late summer and into autumn, well after most other plants in its native region have ceased flowering. As such, it can be a useful plant to grow if you wish to stagger blooming periods in your yard, as you should be doing if your goal is landscaping for the four seasons.

Growing Tips: Cut the prior year's stalks down to the ground in early spring. New shoots will push up from the system of rhizomes underground. Joe Pye weed can be aggressive; if you wish to keep in check, you'll have to contain the spread of the rhizomes either by cutting them or by blocking their progress with bamboo barriers or the like. Pinch back Joe Pye weed in late spring to keep the plant more compact.

Notes: Joe Pye Weed is native to Indiana.  It can be seen this time of the year, along the road or at the edge of woods.  Joe Pye weed attracts butterflies, including tiger swallowtails and black swallowtails.
