* Top of the list is WATERING! Watering your plants and grass is extremely important in July and August. It is recommended that you water plant material one inch per week and even more during drought conditions. The best time of the day to water is in the morning. This allows for the plant foliage to dry before the heat of the day sets in. * Trim shrubs that have finished flowering and other shrubs that don’t flower. * Turn exiting mulch and “top-dress” with new mulch to give it a fresh look and help the landscape retain moisture. * Turn compost pile once a week. * Do not take more than 1/3 off the height of the turf canopy with any one mowing. * Deadhead flowers on a regular basis to promote new flower growth. * Inspect plants for insect and disease problems. Summer is peak time for many insect pests in the garden, such as the Japanese beetle. Treat as needed, but be careful about using pesticides, because they can adversely affect butterflies and other beneficial insects. * You can create butterfly feeding areas in shady places with pieces of watermelon, cantaloupe or other fruit. The second flight for many butterfly species occurs during July. Often, populations are highest during second flight so you may see more butterfly activity around your plants and flowers. * Feed your hummingbirds through the summer by making your own hummingbird feeder solution . Simply mix sugar in water in a 3:1 ratio. Change the solution when it starts to look cloudy. Adding red food coloring may help attract them, but it is not necessary. * Birds need water too, so adding a water feature or birdbath to your garden will help keep them refreshed and cool during the dog days of summer. * Have a cook out on the new patio Progressive Lawnscaping installed!! |

The perfect plant for those who love roses, but have struggled trying to grow “traditional” roses. The Knock Out® Family of Roses are easy to grow and do not require special care. They are the most disease resistant rose on the market. They have stunning flower power with a generous bloom cycle (about every 5-6 weeks) that will continue until the first hard frost. All of the Knock Out® Roses are self-cleaning so there is no need to deadhead.
The Knock Out® Family of Roses are winter hardy to USDA Zone 5 and heat tolerant throughout the entire U.S. They thrive in almost every area of the country. In the coldest regions, they will need winter protection. If un-pruned, The Knock Out® Family of Roses can easily grow to be more than 3-4' wide x 3-4' tall. Periodic trims will keep them maintained at a smaller size. A once a year cut (to about 12-18" above the ground) in early spring (after the last hard frost) is also recommended for maximum performance.
They can fit into any landscape. Plant them individually among shrubs, annuals and perennials in mixed beds and borders. Plant them in large groups to create a colorful hedge. Plant them along a foundation to provide a bright border.
There are seven Knock Out Roses in the family. The original Knock Out, Double Knock Out, Blushing Knock Out, Sunny Knock Out and our favorites: the Rainbow Knock Out – which has single coral pink flowers with yellow centers that are produced in abundance on a compact round shrub. Another of our favorites is: the Pink Double Knock Out - has continuous double bubble-gum-pink blooms that are unfazed by hot Midwest summers. |

Using solar energy produces no air or water pollution, and it is a free and widely available energy source. Here are some facts about solar energy:
* Solar energy reaches earth from the sun through its rays. * Energy from the sun comes in the forms of light and heat. * The term solar energy refers to the use of energy from the sun. * Solar power more specifically refers to the utilization of the sun's energy for electricity. * Solar thermal technology makes use of the sun's heat. * Photovoltaic (PV) technologies convert light from the sun into electricity. * Solar thermal technology can also create electricity by creating steam to power generators. * The use of solar energy does not cause greenhouse gas emissions. * In 1990, a solar powered airplane flew across the U.S. * During the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci already had plans for solar concentrators in his notebooks. * In just one hour, the earth receives more energy from the sun than the entire world uses during a whole year. * Active solar systems can heat both your home and your water. * Solar Energy demand has grown at about 30% per annum over the past 15 years. |

What is a Japanese Beetle: The Japanese beetle is about 1/2 inch long , and is Metallic green and bronze in color with a row of white tufts of hair on each side of it’s boy. Adult beetles are most active from mid-June through July. Adults emerge from the ground and begin feeding on plants in June. Activity is most intense over a 4 to 6 week period beginning in late June, after which the beetles gradually die off. Individual beetles live about 30 to 45 days. Japanese beetles feed on about 300 species of plants, devouring leaves, flowers, and overripe or wounded fruit. They usually feed in groups, starting at the top.. |
