* Cut back perennials. Cutting off the foliage a few inches above the ground in the fall will not harm the plant, perennials, unlike annuals, will come back next year because the roots survive. * Keep plants, especially newly planted ones well watered until the ground freezes. * Remove spent annuals and seasonal vegetables. Unlike perennials, these do not come back year after year, so there is no reason to leave them in the ground. Pull them up, roots and all and add to your compost pile. * Clean, fertilize, add compost and till vegetable garden. Fall prepared soils tend to warm faster and allow earlier planting in spring. * Have soil ready to mound roses for winter protection. Do not mound or cover roses until after leaves drop and soil is near freezing, usually late November or early December. * Complete planting of spring-flowering bulbs. ***see Landscape/Garden Tip section of newsletter for more information*** * Divide early-blooming perennials. * Rake or chop up and compost fallen tree leaves. This will help prevent them from matting down and smothering grass. * Clean weeds and leaf debris out of landscape/garden beds. This will help discourage pests from overwintering in your yard. * Continue mowing lawn as needed. * Collect and save seeds of wildflowers to sow next spring. * Mark your perennials with permanent tags, or create a map showing their locations so you'll know where and what they are when they die back at the end of the season. This will help you to avoid digging up something you intended to keep when you plant bulbs and plants this fall and next spring. * Look for end-of-season clearance sales on seeds, garden tools or other garden supplies. * Carve a Jack-o-Lantern for Halloween!! |

This anemone produces 2-3" dazzling white flowers that emerge on tall stems The flowers of 'Honorine Jobert' can get up to six feet tall and will flower for a good three months, from midsummer through fall.
Design Tips: Ideal for the garden or the vase. 'Honorine Jobert' performs best in rich organic soil kept consistently moist. A charming and prolific shade-garden performer. Plant this anemone in mixed borders with ample space. It pairs well with woodland asters, sedges and hostas.

Turning yourself Green! Why be settled with just a Green thumb…..when you can be so much Greener. Going Green and trying to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle can at times seem like an enormous process, but here are some simple changes you can incorporate into your everyday life now. * Turn out the lights when you leave the room * Do not run the water while you are brushing your teeth * Ask for paper bags at the grocery store and take your plastic bags back to the store so they can recycle them. * Start a compost pile/bin. Put your kitchen and yard waste products in it, instead of the landfill. Added benefit is you can use the nutrient rich compost in your garden/landscape beds and feed your plants * Use biodegradable garbage bags. * Set up a recycle bin in your home and then deposit your recyclables at your local collection center. * Set up a rain barrel and reuse the water mother nature supplies. * Donate clothing you no longer wear, to your local charity, or shelter or maybe sell your clothing to a resale shop and make a few extra dollars. * Mow you grass less…………increase the interval of time between mowing…….or buy a reel mower or electric mower. Use the old fashioned hand clippers to trim. * Water your lawn only when it needs it, not as scheduled. * Buy and use solar lighting in your garden and landscape. * Ride your bike more, instead of driving.. |
