* Keep watering if the weather is dry.  Plants still need water in the cooler weather, just not as much.

* Fall is a good time to plant many of your foundation plants:  container grown and balled-and-burlapped plants. Be sure to dig a good sized hole, and plant it at the same depth that it grew at the nursery.  Water well and add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and help guard against large fluctuations in soil temperature.

* Assess your landscape and garden while full and decide what you want to change for next year.

* Applying mulch to your planting beds will keep soil temperatures more steady and help the soil to retain moisture. And it looks good too!

* Remove spent annuals and fill empty area with mulch, or

* Buy and plant pansies.  They will bloom throughout the fall adding color to your landscape.  You might even have some return for you in the spring!!

* Bring houseplants moved outside for summer, indoors before night temperatures fall below 55. Check soil for insects and repot with fresh soil if necessary.

* Clean birdfeeders and birdbaths. Also, set up bird feeding stations. They will attract birds throughout the winter and liven up your garden. The birds will appreciate them too!!

* Have your lawn aerated by Progressive Lawnscaping.

* Re-seed bare spots or do a complete lawn renovation.

* Divide Hostas...you can easily expand or share your garden.

* Divide and transplant peonies, daylilies, iris and phlox.

* Dig and repot herbs, or take cuttings, for growing indoors over winter.

* Set up your home recycling center.

Fall Lawn Renovations

This Summer’s weather conditions have created abnormally high levels of stress on turf grass and chances are there are areas in your yard that need some help. Early fall is the best time of the year for lawn renovation because environmental conditions are favorable and weed competition is much lower than in spring.

There are several basic types of renovation that you can use to help repair and/or replace your lawn: Aerating, Dethatching, Dead-Spot Replacement, and Total Renovation. The amount of renovation you require will depend on your needs.   Here is a description of each, and what you need to do to make your renovation successful.

Aerating

Aerating is the process of punching holes (usually 3-4 Inches deep) into your lawn to allow water, oxygen, fertilizers, and other nutrients to penetrate the soil and better reach the roots of your grass. Aerating is usually done by pushing hollow cylinders into the ground and forcing out plugs of soil to the lawn surface.

Text Box: Plant of the Month ***Chrysanthemum: Hardy Mum ***

Helen Garden Mum

There are many different types of chrysanthemum, and this month we are highlighting the Helen Garden Mum. This mum has outstanding cushion growth habit and prolific, uniform flowering.  We think it is the best red garden mum to start the fall season. It’s double dark red flowers are prolific and stunning in a floral border or container. The flowers have good color retention and are great for cut flower arrangements.

Moderate growing to 18 to 24 in. tall and wide.

Design Tips:

Keep in mind that for most of the season they are going to be a non-descript plant in the border. Plant mums next to early bloomers and use them to hide plants whose foliage tends to become unattractive late in the season. While mums make a wonderful impact in containers, they will end your garden season with a bang when paired with other fall bloomers like Sedum, Goldenrod, Perovskia and the changing foliage of ornamental grasses.

Mums need at least a half day of sun for good bloom, but full sun is best. Mums set buds in response to day length, so avoid confusing them by planting where they may be exposed to bright night time light.

Maintenance:

To promote a sturdy, bushier plant with lots of blooms, pinch off the top 1 to 2 inches of growth once taller varieties are at least 6 inches high; shorter varieties, 4 to 5 inches high. Continue pinching the tips every 3 - 4 weeks until early July in cooler climates, the end of July in warmer Zones.
