Suet Feeding and Recipes

In the winter when insects are hard to find, offering suet can be an invaluable food
source to many birds. Suet is a high energy, pure fat substance packed with calories to
help birds keep their bodies warm. Suet feeders can attract a wide range of birds such
as chickadees, nuthatches and downy woodpeckers. Suet can be purchased at a variety
of stores...including grocery stores!
Suet cages are inexpensive and can be hung from trees or decorative bird feeding poles.
We recommend wiring the cages shut (just use bread twist ties) to prevent sneaky
squirrels from opening the cage and running off with the entire suet cake.
Another tip...Since it can be messy putting the suet cakes into the suet cage, freeze them
first to shrink their size.
Here are two great recipes submitted by Catherine Brown, a Wildlife Habitat Steward,
for making your own suet. This recipe is her favorite and is called Bird Pudding:

Bird Pudding
2 qt. Water
1 cup Margarine
4 cups of either Rolled Oats or Cornmeal
1 cup Peanut Butter
1 cup Chopped Fruit: Raisins, Dates, Apples, Wheat Germ, Bird Seed and/or Sunflower
Seeds
In a large pot heat the water, margarine, peanut butter, slowly add cereal and the fruit
and/or seed
Cook until thick.
Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Pat into recycled plastic containers
Freeze and serve to the birds.

Here is the other recipe. This recipe is appealing for two reasons.
1. You do not need a suet feeder
2. Like the suet recipe above, it is adaptable for the vegetarian cooks.

Wildlife Energy Muffins
1 cup Chunky Peanut Butter
1 cup Pure Rendered Suet or Vegetable Shortening
2 1/2 cups Course Yellow Cornmeal
Seeds Bird Seed, Unsalted Sunflower Seeds etc.
Raisins or other Dried Fruits
Roasted or Unsalted Raw Peanuts
Pipe Cleaners
1. Mix peanut butter, suet/shortening and cornmeal together
Stir in seeds, fruits and nuts.
2. Make 'muffins' by placing the mixture in a muffin tin. Sprinkle seeds on top.
3. Place a pipe cleaner in each muffin to act as a hanger, and place the tin in the freezer
to harden.
4. Once hardened, hang the muffins from a tree.

Don't forget that water is important to birds! Use a deicer to prevent water from
freezing.
